Structure
In the American Mafia, there are three main positions called the administration. The administration consists of the Boss, the Consigliere, and the Underboss. Underneath these three leaders are the Caporegime (Captains), who control the soldiers and associates. The soldiers and associates are the lower positions in the mob and are responsible for carrying out many of the day to day dealings.
When jobs were to be carried out the higher officials would pass the orders through the chain of command to make sure they were not associated with anyone should the job go awry. All members of the Mafia, except for associates, are called “made men”. This means that they are to be unharmed, and if they are endangered, retaliation will occur. This structure was very successful, and it resulted in flourishing crime families throughout America.
